Rett Syndrome

What is Rett Syndrome ?

This is a severe developmental disability affecting girls. The disorder has an onset in the first months of life. Typically girls have a developmental plateau followed by onset of seizures, regression and breath holding, hand stereotypies, and loss then of functional use of their hands. Nearly all will be unable to talk and only about 50% will be able to walk. They develop a severe mental retardation. This is a complex disorder and requires a multidisciplinary team for management.
